About us

Royal Capital Management invests its private capital in debt and equity investments across a wide range of asset classes.

The firm was established in 2000 by founders Mark Shoom and Stephen Rider, both of whom had extensive previous experience in the investment industry. Before establishing RoyCap, Mark was an Investment Executive with CIBC Wood Gundy with expertise in trading, securities analysis and deal structuring. At the Toronto Stock Exchange, Stephen managed the Index and Statistical groups and was involved in the design and development of the first Exchange Traded Fund (“ETF”). He went on to manage several equity derivative and structured trading desks in Toronto, London and New York.

The two recognized that many investment opportunities were better-suited to a company focused on transacting in the securities markets than to a larger firm focused on marketing and client relations. From that single realization, RoyCap was born.

The two recognized that many investment opportunities were better-suited to a company focused on transacting in the securities markets than to a larger firm focused on marketing and client relations. From that single realization, RoyCap was born.

The firm began as a pioneer in electronic and algorithmic trading of securities, and was one of the most active non-investment dealers trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange. In the years that followed, the firm diversified its investment focus across a broad spectrum of companies and industry sectors in both public and private markets.

Today, RoyCap invests independently and with its strategic partners in public and private companies, real estate, mortgage lending, and non-traditional loans. The firm has also engaged in numerous operational restructurings, leveraging its capital and management expertise.
